Nurses, under the auspices of University graduates of nursing science association (UGONSA), have decried the rising cases of suicide amongst students in the nation’s institutions of higher learning, describing the unfortunate development as a “sad commentary”. In a statement by the UGONSA Assistant National Secretary East, Nurse P.O. Eteng, the association opined that the sad development now occurs almost every other week among our youths. The statement read, “The questions begging for urgent answers are - what could make a young person in-waiting as a leader of tomorrow, see no reason to continue to exist? Have we as a Country by our actions or inactions subtly or overtly made the future of our young generation irretrievably bleak? Anambra State government has offered automatic employment to the over all best student in the National Nursing and Midwifery final qualification examination for Midwives in Nigeria. Governor Willie Obiano made this known while presenting the winner with certificate and cash award during the State Executive Council meeting at the Government House Awka. Government House anchor man, Ejike Abana was there and reports that Governor Obiano who congratulated the winner Miss Chisom Ezeani of Saint Joseph’s College of Midwifery Adazi Nnukwu in Anaocha Local Government Area for making the state proud, urged other students to emulate her. Each year, ICN leads the celebrations on International Nurses Day, which is traditionally held on 12 May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. Next year’s celebrations will be extra special because the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated 2020 as The Year of the Nurse and Midwife, and because it will be the 200th anniversary of Nightingale’s birth. To mark the occasion, ICN is planning and coordinating a wide range of activities throughout the year.   The theme for 2020, Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Nursing the World to Health, demonstrates how nurses are central to addressing a wide range of health challenges. The Nigerian Medical Association and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives have unanimously resolved to adopt in its entirety a report of its inter-professional harmony committee set up to look into matters of professional disharmony in the health sector. According to a communiqué signed by the national leaders of both associations, the decision was arrived at after a careful deliberation of the report submitted by its joint committee. The move is part of both associations continued effort to bring the long standing rivalry among health workers to an end. You will recall that in January 2019, the associations had met and set up an inter-professional harmony committee to investigate the strained relationship between doctors and nurses and develop viable solutions to end the crisis. Contrary to the rumor making the rounds that some suspected and remanded employees of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu (FNHE) had a hand in the murder of Nurse Maria Amadi (PhD), emerging information reveals that the abominable act might have been committed by armed robbers. The information was availed by Evangelist Tochukwu Obiora (alias Iko Nso), who disclosed he is the Assistant State Commander of Enugu State Neighborhood Watch, to the University Graduates of Nursing Science Association (UGONSA), the professional association of nurses with a minimum qualification of first degree in nursing. A lawyer to Mr. Afam Ndu, one of the suspects being detained over the murder of Mrs. Maria Amadi, a senior staff of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, Barr. JMCC Ogbuka has come with fresh issues as the security operatives continue in their push to crack those behind the killing. Daily Post reports that Mrs. Amadi, from Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, was murdered in front of her house at Trans-Ekulu Area of the State at the close of work. Ndu, a senior staff of the same hospital, was remanded alongside two other officials of the hospital over the murder. There were reports that before the deceased died she mentioned the suspects, including four others who at large as being the masterminds of the shooting incident. All the suspects work in the same hospital with the deceased, Amadi. The World Health Organisation has said that, globally, women live longer than men; and that the difference in the male-female lifespan is particularly stark in high-income countries. This is contained in the WHO yearly analysis of global health statistics titled, World Health Statistics Overview 2019. The study also sheds light on men’s inbuilt “biological frailty” and poor immune systems, which are said to be responsible for the miscarriage of male foetuses and death of male children in their first year of life. The report, led by Dr. Richard Cibulskis, notes that the average life expectancy globally has increased by five-and-a-half years since the turn of the century, and that women outlive men everywhere. “Whether it’s homicide, road accidents, suicide, cardiovascular disease – time and time again, men are doing worse than women,” Cibulskis notes.
