Nurses under the aegis of University Graduates of Nursing Science Association (UGONSA) have called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to reconsider its recent scrapping of internship position as a post that attracts grade level in the Civil Service. In a joint statement by its National President, Chief (Hon). Solomon E. O. Egwuenu, and its Ag. National Secretary, Nurse Philip O. Eteng, the association said that such a move may be good for other sectors of the economy but certainly not for the health sector.According to the association, the period of internship is the most critical period of training of the healthcare professionals be it the nurse, the doctor, the pharmacist, or the Medical Lab Scientist. It is at this period that the foundation for practice is laid. Toying with such programme amounts to toying with the foundation; a house built on a faulty foundation is doomed to fail. The statement read, “The bulks of the healthcare professionals that constitute the interns are a crit...

Nigerian nurses fleeing to UK hit 4yr high

Nigerian nurses fleeing to UK hit 4yr high  Only 20 Nigeria-trained nurses joined the UK nursing workforce between the six-months of October 2015 and March 2016. Four years later in the same period of 2020, the number jumped to 444, the highest number of Nigeria-trained nurses joining in a six-month period. Presently, there are 3,767 Nigeria-trained nurses on the register of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of the United Kingdom. While they are still not as much as medical doctors who have left Nigeria, the departure pace has quickened in recent years and if not for COVID-19, the exodus by end of 2020 would have been more significant. BusinessDay analysis of the NMC UK’s register for the last five years and interviews with Nigerian nurses (already in the UK and planning to leave) show a steady but overlooked trend over the years. Medical doctors are not the only ones leaving Nigeria, and while their departure has received more coverage, other health workers are leaving too. As a...
